Engineered stone blends resin with crushed stone, compressed under high pressure to create a robust, uniform surface. It boasts a density that ensures durability and a surface that resists stains and doesn’t require sealing. Available in 20mm and 30mm slabs, these benchtops can be mitred for a thicker appearance and come in a plethora of colours. They are among the most accessible benchtop materials to maintain, though, like granite, they require templating prior to production.

Favoured in New Zealand kitchens, melamine, or low-pressure laminate, mimics the appearance of higher-cost laminates at a fraction of the price. Bonded to MDF or particle board, melamine panels are scratch and stain-resistant. MDF melamine boards are particularly robust, reducing the likelihood of chipping. Edges are finished with colour-matched 2mm PVC, enhancing durability and aesthetic coherence. Its affordability, durability, and variety in colour and design make melamine popular.

Thermoforming involves moulding vinyl foil over MDF panels, allowing diverse door designs and a seamless edge. The vinyl’s flexibility increases its resistance to wear and tear compared to painted finishes. Thermoform options are available in highly textured, satin, and gloss finishes and can also align with melamine colours for a cohesive kitchen look.

Commonly known as “Formica,” high-pressure laminate is created by pressing melamine-soaked paper under intense heat. The resultant laminate is then applied to substrates ranging from 30mm to 70mm thick. Edges can be finished squarely or curved to specific radii, accommodating various design preferences. Laminate’s popularity stems from its vast array of colours and finishes, combined with its durability, ease of maintenance, and cost-effectiveness, making it a preferred choice for over 80% of benchtops in New Zealand.

Sourced from quarries worldwide, granite slabs are cut, polished, and sealed before installation. Although it needs re-sealing every few years due to its porosity, granite’s toughness and visual appeal make it a valued kitchen feature. It is notably pricier than laminate options and requires templating post-cabinet installation, leading to a brief waiting period.
